hi everyone, I thought it would be interesting to post a discussion about the Great FSX: since the release of FSX SP1 and SP2, and with so many Graphic Cards and Rigs, it would be cool to share knowledge about what settings and configuration work best (both iternal FSX settings as well as Graphic card global settings)

and maybe with time, we can draw a picture about optimal configurations based on Cards and windows versions!

so..to begin with, I have home built rig, a Nvidia 7900 GS , Vista 32, 8 GB of Ram (twisters), FSX delux, SP1 and SP2 (uninstalled SP2 coz Fps where down)..I have great frame rate generlly, I mean I have instances when I hit 112 , most of the time my FPS are at between 30 and 50 (outside the aircraft) and 38 -60 ( inside the aircraft) ...except in condesnsed loactions they can go as low as 14.(New York...KBOS..etc)..but in most areas and altitudes, I love FSX...

was wondering if someone can explain to me something about the global settings configuration of the card?

Anisotropic filtering
Anisotropic mip filtering optimization
Anisotropic sample optimization
Antialiasing settings
Conformant texture clamp
Force mipmaps
Hardware acceleration
Negative LOD bias
Texture Filtering
Transparency antialiasing
Trilinear optimization
Triple buffering
Vertical sync

what do these do and mean?

one more thing, can anyone tell me how to make vist accept the 8 RAM?

waiting for an answer from the FSX ferry

Hi, Ali.

Good topic. I'll create a chart describing each one of those graphic card settings and post it here.

I don't understand the part about "how to make 'Vista' acept the 8 RAM". Can you explain what you mean? Since Vista can actually address 128 Gigs of RAM, I'm sure there's more to your question.

dear L.D. James

thanks for your quick reply...

i understood that vista does not accept more than three gigs, although I have 8 Gigs of Ramn, when i check my cpu's sysetm info..

it will only recognize 3.8, so was wondering if that meant that it was not reading the other four, and read somewhere that Vista does not read more than that unless I play around with the command promt?

looking forward for the Global settings configirations?

Thanks man

Ali

How's it going, Ali.

As I mentioned before, Vista's maximum memory addressing is 128 Gigs. That's 16 times the 8 that you say you have. It's also 120 Gigs more than what you say you have installed. I don't know where you heard that it only recognizes 3.8. The person may have been speaking of something else. It will recognize and use the ram.

There are certain instances where devices might require memory mapping the first 4 Gig address, so it might report the a gap at that address, and report 4 Gigs as 3.8 (for example). But if you add more ram, you'd get a higher report.

There's a chance there might be some problem or defect with either the ram or the ram socket(s) of the additional 4 gigs that's being recognized. However, this isn't a limitation of Vista.

How are you checking yoru cpu's system info? What do you see for Memory (RAM) under Start -> [Right Click] Computer -> Properties?

On the Global settings configurations, I was still wording the link I'm creating. I'll get it to you ASAP.

How are you doing, Ali.

I was looking for a response on whether my reference to 128 Gigs being the Vista limit helped to address your RAM problem. Also, I was looking forward to knowing if the CPU's sytem info you were referring to came from the description I gave for locating it.

By the way, take a look at my recommended settings for your hardware (your Video Card). After setting up your video card, go in and check your FSX's display settings. There isn't a one settings for all for the software. Having your hardware optimized, I'd recommend starting out with the default and testing some of the variations.

You can use FSX's feature to save your current settings, then click on the option to restore the default settings, then optimize to your preference from there.

Hey all,

I've been having some troubles with a 'fatal error' message each time I start a flight in free flight mode. I had the problem before and started from a fresh install and it went away for awhile, but now it is back. I thought it might have something to do with the fact I just installed FSInn, but I don't think that's it. I run FSX with acceleration, 2GB ram, geforce 6800xt.

I am starting fresh again, so any tips and pointers on settings that might cause the problem I was having would be appreciated!

Hi, Pooley.

This is a topic/thread on Settings and Configuration. If you're looking for optimizing your system or have tips on this topic, please post them here.

If you have a new unrelated issue, please start a new topic with it. This will make it easier for the ones searching to find what they are looking for. It'll also make it easier for users looking to contribute to solutions of various problems to be able to contribute where they have experience and expertise.

Hi.Again LD.James

sorry was out of town...ok..thank you for your configuration recommendations...but I found that the ones I had before...gave me better performance...i will post them soon for you and others to study...

regarding the RAM..well...I open control panel...system...and my RAM sayes 3381..but I have 8 gigs of ram..2 gigs per slot...so was wondering if there was a proble with that...although in the bios screen on start up..it reads 8 Ram perfectly, but inside Vista..it only recognizes 3381..?????
