My Father has an older Dell XPS (the kind in the blue case with chrome accents). His window's automatic update told him that I.E 7 was ready. He downloaded it, restarted the computer and received an error msg. His desktop has gone to a white background with a triangle and exclamation point. The writing on the desk top says a system restore is needed. He can't preform that, because it says it was unable. He can not access the Internet as I.E opens but won't connect, it remains a blank page. He likes to race and fly online, which he can do I.P to I.P, but he can't go online to join a server. He's certain that he received a corrupted download, but the most important thing to him is not to loose his favorite's list. Is there something we can do so he can regain Internet access, and not loose his favorites? He is thinking that if he could just get the exe. file e-mailed to him it will fix the problem?

Thank you for any help
Bob

Try booting to the OS Disk (Windows XP). There should be two options to hit "R" for repair. Use the second Repair option. This should overwrite the corrupted files and bring it back to a workable manner.

After that, try reinstalling IE7 again.

There are four procedures for bringing the system back to a workable state. This is most likely the best one, where it will retain your setup and all your favorites.

If this doesn't work I'll give you suggestions of the best way to handle the other methods.

By the way, don't mix-up "Repair" from whatever Dell might use for actually reinitializing the system to the way it was when it was new. That method would disregard your data and reformat the hard drive. You'll know if you'll about to use that method because it should give warning messages.

Thank you so much Mr. James, his problem was fixed. He was able to remove I.E. 7 through the add/remove programs directory, then reboot and use the OS disk... that easy =).

Sorry for the delay in the response, he wanted to back up his important files ect... first, just in case.

Thank you again,
Bob
